This lovely family invited me into their stunning Victorian home in Richmond, Virginia. The house, beautifully styled by the mom, had a historical charm that reminded me of an old mansion—elegant yet cozy, full of character and warmth. From the moment I stepped inside at 8 a.m., the soft morning sunlight began filling every corner, and I knew it was going to be a magical shoot.

We started in their spacious kitchen, where a large window poured in golden light, perfect for capturing the quiet, intimate moments of an early breakfast. The family has two sweet, energetic boys who were so open and joyful throughout the whole experience. They were completely at ease in front of the camera, which made for such natural and heartfelt images.
After breakfast, we moved to the parents’ bedroom—another light-filled space that offered the perfect setting for cozy family moments. There was play, cuddles, laughter, and some soft, soulful portraits of mom bathed in the morning glow beside the window. These images are some of my favorites—so raw and full of feeling.
From there, we stepped outside into their beautiful native garden, just in time for the azaleas to bloom. The boys ran around with excitement, and we couldn’t resist taking a few portraits next to a vibrant pink azalea bush. It felt like a little secret garden hidden in the middle of the city.
The boys had the idea to play with the garden hose—one of their favorite warm-weather activities. I always love when sessions unfold this way, guided by the natural rhythm of the family’s life. It adds so much authenticity to the images.
To finish, we took a short morning walk down to the nearby James River, one of Richmond’s most iconic spots. The river was peaceful and quiet, with barely anyone around. We played, relaxed, snuggled, and took in the calmness of the water. It was the perfect end to a session that truly felt like a slow, beautiful morning together.
I left feeling inspired and full of gratitude. I feel so lucky when clients resonate with my work and share my love for natural light, emotion-filled storytelling, and documentary-style family photography. We even found out we admire some of the same photographers, which made this experience feel even more aligned.
This session was everything I love about what I do: honest, soulful, warm, and completely unique to this family’s rhythm and love. I can’t wait to photograph more mornings like this one.
